Africa’s Original Dirt Shirt is more than just a clothing brand; it’s a journey, a passion, and a tribute to the rich heritage of our continent. For over 30 years, Robert and Julie, nestled in the shadow of Table Mountain, Cape Town, have been immersed in the world of t-shirts. But it wasn’t until a serendipitous moment in 2012, watching Mike Rowe’s ‘Dirty Jobs,’ that the vision for Dirt Shirts was born.
The African Cotton we use comes from Malawi, Zimbabwe and South Africa. The bulk of our Red Dirt (high in Iron Oxide) comes from Sishen mine, located in the Northern Cape province near the mining town of Kathu.
Capture the essence of Africa’s natural beauty in a wearable form. Inspired by the age-old tradition of using natural elements for dyeing, we embarked on an 18-month odyssey. We sought the purest 100% African cotton and the perfect reddish-brown earth, the very soul of our landscape. Countless tests and experiments later, we perfected a unique hand-dyeing process that infuses each shirt with the authentic colours of Africa.
Every Dirt Shirt tells a story. It’s the story of the ancient traditions of our people, the story of our 30-year passion for crafting quality apparel, and the story of the thousands of people around the world who now carry a piece of Africa with them.
We believe in authenticity and craftsmanship. That’s why we choose to sell our Dirt Shirts directly to you, online and at select Cape Town craft markets. This allows us to maintain the integrity of our product and connect personally with our customers, sharing the heart of Africa with the world.

Robert has been in the T-shirt business for 35 years. He loves meeting people and selling at craft markets — it’s the heart of what he does. None of it would be possible without his wife, Julie, who’s been by his side every step of the way.
